ChatGPT vs Google: what parents and teachers should know

One looks things up. The other writes a sentence that sounds right. Your child needs to know which one they are talking to — because it decides when an answer is worth checking.

For twenty years the answer to almost everything was “Google it.” Now a child can just ask. And the two feel so similar — type a question, get an answer — that the difference underneath is easy to miss.

It is worth ten minutes of your time, because that difference is the whole of when to trust an answer.

Google finds. ChatGPT writes.

Ask a search engine something and it does not read the internet for you. It did the reading months ago and built an index — a giant sorted list of which words appear on which pages. Your search looks up that list.

This is a real question from FutureMinds, from a level about how searching works:

“A search engine answers your query over billions of pages in 0.4 seconds. How?”

The answer children pick from four options: it built a sorted index ahead of time and searches that. The expensive work happened long before anyone typed anything.

So a search result is a pointer. It says: this page exists, go and look. Your child decides what to trust, and the source is right there to be judged.

ChatGPT does something else entirely. It has learned the patterns of an enormous amount of text, and it produces the words that most plausibly come next. Give it “Instead of turning left, she turned…” and it knows “right” is likely. Scale that up and you get a paragraph on photosynthesis that reads as though someone wrote it for you.

That is genuinely useful, and it is not retrieval. Nothing was looked up. A sentence was composed.

Which is why it can be confidently wrong

A search result that does not exist simply isn’t shown to you. A sentence that isn’t true reads exactly like one that is.

Here is a real exchange from a FutureMinds level, where a child rules on each line of an AI’s reply:

Line two is honest — it says probably. Line three quietly drops the hedge and treats the guess as settled fact. There may be no parcel. The guess became the evidence, in one line, with nothing marking the change.

That is the mechanism behind almost every confident wrong answer your child will meet. Not lying. Pattern-completion, presented in the same voice as everything else.

Two things to try this week

With a younger child. Ask an AI for something only a source can settle — the opening hours of your local pool, or whether a shop is open on Sunday. Then check the actual page together. The point is not to catch it out; sometimes it will be right. The point is that you cannot tell which from the answer alone.

With a teenager. Ask it for a quotation with a page number, or a study with an author and a year. Then try to find that source. Fabricated references are the single most common way this goes wrong in schoolwork, and they are hard to spot precisely because they look correct — a plausible name, a plausible university, a plausible year.

The rule that actually survives

Do not teach “don’t trust AI.” Blanket suspicion does not survive contact with a tool that is genuinely useful, and a child taught it ignores the warning the first time the AI helps with homework. Within a fortnight the rule is gone.

Teach the question instead:

Don’t ask only “What does AI say?” Ask “How does AI know?”

If the answer is “it read it somewhere and can show me”, that is checkable. If the answer is “it wrote a sentence that sounds right”, that is a starting point, not a finish.

It scales with the stakes, which is the useful part. Explaining gravity for a homework question? The cost of being slightly wrong is nearly nothing. A medicine dose, a train time, whether school is closed tomorrow? Go to the source.

So is one better than the other?

No, and framing it that way misses what to teach. Search is good at finding information. A language model is good at working with it — explain this simply, give me an example, now quiz me on it, rewrite this so a ten-year-old follows it. That last set is genuinely hard for a search engine and easy for a chatbot.

Modern chatbots blur the line further by searching the web and citing sources. That helps, and it does not remove the job: open the citation and check it says what the answer claims. A link in a footnote is not the same as a link you have read.

The sentence worth leaving a child with is short:

AI can help you find an answer. It does not decide whether the answer is true.
