At what age should kids learn about AI?
Two boundaries, set by two completely different things — one by reading comprehension, the other by law. Confusing them is what makes this question feel hard.
Around nine for structured learning, and the useful answer is not a single number — it is that two different things change at two different ages. Nine is when most children can read a question carefully enough to reason about it. Thirteen is when the law changes what a company may collect about them. Those are separate lines, and confusing them is what makes this question feel harder than it is.
We had to answer this for real when we set the age range for our own app, and the two boundaries landed for completely different reasons.
Why nine, and not six
Younger children can absolutely use AI. What they cannot reliably do is the thing that makes AI literacy worth teaching: hold a claim in their head, notice it sounds confident, and ask whether it is actually true.
That is a reading-comprehension task before it is a technology task. A question like “Nova said your parcel has arrived — did she know that, or guess it?” needs the child to re-read two sentences and compare them. At six or seven that fails for reasons that have nothing to do with AI.
Why thirteen is a legal line, not an educational one
The second boundary is not ours to choose. Under COPPA, a child’s thirteenth birthday is the point at which the rules about collecting their personal information change. So thirteen is where the consent line sits, whatever you or we think about maturity.
This has a practical consequence most parents meet without being told: the mainstream AI tools were not built for under-13s, and their terms usually say so. When your ten-year-old uses one, they are generally using an adult product, on an adult account, under adult terms.
We learned to respect that line the hard way in our own design. Our age bands moved twice — 6–10/10–14, then 7–11/12–16, and now 9–12 and 13–16. The last move happened specifically because the old split cut across the thirteenth birthday, leaving twelve-year-olds grouped with teenagers while still being COPPA-protected. The band boundary and the consent boundary are now the same line.
What actually changes between the two ages
This is the part worth knowing, because it tells you what to teach rather than when to start.
Concrete and rule-shaped. Never put your home address in a chat box. Clear boundaries, obvious examples, one idea at a time.
Judgment, not rules. Flattery, claims that cannot be checked, requests for secrecy, someone moving a conversation to another app. Patterns rather than single moments.
The younger band can be taught as instructions. The older band cannot, because the situations a teenager meets do not announce themselves — the difficulty is a ladder of individually reasonable steps, and only the shape of the whole thing gives it away.
If your child is under nine
Start with the one idea that costs nothing and does not need reading fluency: a computer can be wrong, and sounding sure is not the same as being right. A voice assistant mishearing a request is a perfectly good demonstration, and most six-year-olds have already seen it happen and found it funny.
That single idea is the foundation everything else is built on. The structured version can wait for the reading to catch up.
