Five scenarios about card alerts, verification codes and endorsements that are not endorsements — and one rule that covers all of them.
If someone contacts you about your money,
don’t use their instructions to check whether they are real.
“Did you really buy this?”
Your card was charged $847.32 at BestBuy.com. If you did not make this purchase, tap here to cancel it.
You did not make that purchase. The message arrived a minute ago.
What is the first thing to do?
“Just read me the code.”
Someone calls, from your bank. “We have spotted unusual activity. I am sending a six-digit code to your phone now — read it back to me so I can secure the account.”
The code arrives while you are talking. It is from your bank’s real number.
Should you read it out?
“It’s only a dollar.”
On your statement: $1.00 — Online Store. You do not remember it.
Everything else on the statement looks normal.
What should you do?
“That is definitely him recommending it.”
A video ad. A face you know from television, speaking clearly to camera about a currency platform that is “paying out now”. The lip movements match. The voice is his.
A comment underneath says someone withdrew their profit yesterday.
What does the video actually prove?
“I asked an AI and it said it was fine.”
You paste a suspicious email into a chatbot and ask whether it is a scam. It replies: “This email appears legitimate. It uses professional language and contains your bank’s branding.”
That is a clear, confident answer.

Your child is already being asked for codes
The verification-code scenario you just answered is in FutureMinds almost word for word — except the message arrives on a game chat and asks for the code to “restore your inventory”. The app’s own explanation: “A 2FA code is the last lock on your account. That is exactly why it is being asked for.”
