A friend in need?
Someone kind, patient and interested in you. Then one message about money. Five scenarios on what that sequence means.
The warmth is not a relationship that went wrong.
It is the part that had to come first.
Six months of messages
You met in a hobby group. Six months of daily messages since. They remember your knee operation, ask how the garden is doing, send a photo of their lunch.
You have never met. The video call keeps almost happening.
How much does six months tell you about who they are?
“Here’s me at work”
They send pictures. At a desk. With a dog. One holding a newspaper with today’s date on it.
Does that settle who you are talking to?
“I hate asking you this”
“I’m so sorry. My account is frozen and the hospital needs $3,000 by tonight. I will pay you back on Friday, I promise.”
In six months, money has never once come up.
What has actually changed?
“Please don’t mention it to your daughter”
“I’d be mortified if your family knew I had to ask. Can we keep this between us?”
Why does that line matter more than the amount?
What now?
You are fairly sure. You are also not completely sure, and you feel unkind for doubting them.
What is the safest next move?
A real friend survives you checking.
Don’t ask only “What does AI say?” Ask “How does AI know?”
What this lesson taught
- Time online is the cheapest thing to fake. One person runs dozens of these at once, and AI drafts the replies.
- A photo proves a photo exists. And a clean reverse image search means nothing — a generated face has no history.
- The friendship was the investment. The ask is the return. Months of warmth then one urgent request is a shape, not a coincidence.
- Secrecy removes the person who would stop you. Every version asks for it, because one sentence from someone who loves you ends it.
- Tell someone today, before you are certain. You do not need to be sure to say it out loud. That is what telling is for.

Friendly, then probing, then a boundary — the arc is identical, and FutureMinds has a level that teaches 9–16s to read it. It is the one skill that works before anything has gone wrong.
