Can you trust AI with your classroom?
Five situations you are likely to meet this term — a detector that says 92%, a plan that fits half the class, a Sunday evening and a hundred essays. None of them are about how to use a chatbot. All of them are about where your judgment has to stay.
“The detector said 92%.”
A student hands in an unusually polished essay. You run it through an AI detector. It returns 92% likely AI-generated.
The student has never written this well before.
What do you do next?
“But ChatGPT told me.”
A student’s presentation states: “The Great Wall of China is visible from the Moon.” Asked where it came from, they say ChatGPT told them.
It is not visible from the Moon. It is barely visible from low orbit.
What is the thing worth teaching here?
“It can grade the whole set tonight.”
A hundred essays to mark. A tool offers to grade them instantly — a numerical score and written feedback for each.
The feedback reads well. It is Sunday evening.
What is the real risk?
“The lesson plan looks excellent.”
You ask for a lesson plan for your 7th-grade class. What comes back is well structured, nicely sequenced and genuinely usable-looking.
The reading level suits about half the class. Two activities do not match your curriculum.
What do you do with it?
“More detail gives a better answer.”
You want help drafting a report on a struggling student, so you paste in their full name, grades, behavior notes, IEP details and family circumstances.
The draft that comes back is thoughtful and well written.
What should you have done differently?
AI can assist judgment. It shouldn’t replace it.
Don’t ask only “What does AI say?” Ask “How does AI know?”
